In 2020, Medicaid covered approximately 60% of children (ages 0-18) in South Carolina. When addressing the needs of children, it is important to recognize and understand their characteristics and the context within which they live. There are many factors to consider when researching and developing strategic plans for children, including Medicaid enrollment status, vulnerabilities from outside factors, and if the child is in early or late childhood. With these considerations in mind, the Institute for Families in Society (IFS), with funding from and in collaboration with The Duke Endowment, developed the Children’s Health and Resource Geographic Exploration for Data-Driven Decisions (CHARGED³) initiative to help guide planning and data-driven decision making around the holistic needs of South Carolina children ages 0-5.

As part of CHARGED³, IFS developed several products, including the Geospatial Environmental Scan^© (GeoEScan^©) – an innovative research tool available as both a PDF and on the web – and an online hub that provides related information resources and tools.
